Aptos FAQ
- What is Aptos?
- Aptos (APT) is a Layer 1 launched October 2022 by ex-Meta Diem engineers at Aptos Labs. It uses Move — the language Meta designed for Diem — and AptosBFT consensus. Positioned as a high-throughput, low-latency chain for mainstream applications, with emphasis on parallelism and upgradability.
- How is Aptos different from Sui?
- Both came from the Diem team's Move language, but diverged on data modelling. Aptos uses an account-based model (closer to Ethereum's mental model). Sui uses objects with parallel execution by default. Aptos ships with Block-STM for parallelism; Sui's parallelism is object-graph-driven. Both target sub-second finality.
- What is the Aptos ecosystem?
- DeFi: Thala, Aries, Econia. Stablecoins: native USDC, USDT, plus Tether-issued USD₮ on-chain. Gaming and consumer apps leveraging low fees and fast finality. Microsoft partnered for identity work; Mastercard integrated for cross-border payments (2024). Ecosystem growth is slower than Solana but consistent.
- Can I stake APT?
- Yes. Delegated staking runs roughly 6-8% APR, with delegation to any validator via Petra or other Aptos wallets. Lockup is typically 14-30 days depending on the validator's terms; epoch is ~2 hours, so rewards compound frequently. Minimum delegation amounts vary per validator.
