What cookies the Site uses
Strictly necessary, always on
- Session identifier. A rotating short-lived hash used to tie requests together for anti-abuse. Expires within 24 hours. No personal data.
- Theme preference. Stores your light or dark choice so the site does not flash on the next visit. First-party only.
- Consent state. Remembers whether an EU or UK visitor has responded to the cookie banner. Without it, the banner would re-appear on every page load.
Analytics, always on
- Google Analytics 4. Measures aggregate traffic, referrals, and popular pages. IP addresses are truncated before storage, with a 14-month retention window.
- Platform analytics. Privacy-friendly page-view and Core Web Vitals measurement. No cross-site tracking.
Advertising, optional, consent required in the EU and the UK
- Google AdSense.Shows display ads and uses cookies to measure whether an ad was effective. Full details live on Google’s technologies page.
Opting out
- EU and UK visitors see a consent banner before advertising cookies run. Declining all keeps advertising storage off.
- Everyone can change preferences at any time via the Cookie preferences link in the footer.
- Browser-level controls let most readers block third-party cookies site-wide.
- Do Not Track is respected for advertising cookies when the header is present, regardless of banner state.
Why we set cookies at all
The honest answer is short. The publication needs to understand what readers actually read so coverage can lean into those stories. It needs to serve ads to keep the lights on. And it needs to remember your theme choice so the site does not look like it is having a seizure on the next visit.
