What is Cosmos?
Cosmos is a network of sovereign blockchains ("zones") connected via IBC — the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. The Cosmos Hub is the flagship chain; ATOM is its native asset. Launched 2019 on Tendermint BFT consensus (now CometBFT), Cosmos pioneered the modular "app-chain" thesis.
What is IBC?
IBC is a trustless messaging protocol between Cosmos SDK chains — tokens, cross-chain governance, and arbitrary data move through it without a custodial bridge. IBC has expanded beyond Cosmos: Polkadot connected in 2024, and Ethereum integration via Union Labs is active. Over $100B in all-time volume has moved across IBC.
What does ATOM do?
Three things: staking (~15-20% APR delegating to Hub validators), governance voting on Cosmos Hub proposals, and fees. Since the introduction of Interchain Security (ICS), consumer chains (Neutron, Stride) pay the Hub for security in ATOM — bundling economic value back to the Hub.
How does Cosmos differ from Polkadot?
Polkadot has shared security by default: parachains inherit the relay chain's validator set. Cosmos chains are sovereign — each picks its own validators. Trade-offs: Cosmos is lighter-weight and more flexible; Polkadot has richer cross-chain guarantees but more coupling. Both target heterogeneous-chain interop; they picked different sides of the trade.
