Ethereum Classic FAQ
- What is Ethereum Classic?
- Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum chain that kept running after the 2016 hard fork reversed the DAO hack. Holders who opposed the rollback — arguing that on-chain state should be immutable — continued on the un-forked chain, which became ETC.
- How does ETC differ from ETH?
- Still proof-of-work (ETH moved to proof-of-stake in 2022 at The Merge). Supply cap at ~210 million ETC (ETH is uncapped). Much smaller ecosystem, shorter average block time (~13s), and a culture more aligned with "code is law" Bitcoin ethics than with ETH-aligned smart-contract tooling.
- Has ETC been attacked?
- Yes. Multiple 51% attacks hit ETC between 2019 and 2020 when hashrate was low enough to rent on Nicehash for a few thousand dollars per hour. After The Merge freed up GPUs in late 2022, ETC hashrate surged, making attacks materially more expensive. The attack history remains part of the risk assessment.
- Who develops ETC?
- A small but active community across ETC Core, Hyperledger Besu (supports ETC chain config), and IOHK (historic contributor). Protocol upgrades happen via a Classic Improvement Proposal (ECIP) process. Development pace is slower than ETH but deliberate — major changes avoid breaking the "immutable ledger" narrative.
