Hedera FAQ

What is Hedera?
Hedera (HBAR) is a public distributed ledger launched in 2019 using the Hashgraph consensus algorithm (not a blockchain). It's governed by a council of major enterprises (Google, IBM, Boeing, Deutsche Telekom) who run the initial nodes.
How is Hashgraph different from a blockchain?
Hashgraph uses a gossip-about-gossip protocol plus virtual voting to reach consensus in a directed acyclic graph rather than a linear chain. This gives Hedera high throughput (10 000+ TPS), low fees ($0.0001), and fast finality — at the cost of a permissioned validator set for now.
Who controls Hedera?
A governing council of up to 39 enterprise members, each holding a 3-year renewable term. Over time, Hedera plans to transition to permissionless nodes. HBAR holders participate in proxy staking rather than direct validator selection.
What is HBAR used for?
HBAR pays network fees for transactions, smart-contract calls, and the Hedera Consensus Service (audit-log as a service). It's also required to anchor tokens issued via the Hedera Token Service, used by enterprise tokenisation pilots.
