Internet Computer FAQ

What is the Internet Computer?
Internet Computer (ICP) is a Layer 1 launched May 2021 by the DFINITY Foundation. Its goal is to host full websites and applications entirely on-chain — as "canisters" — replacing conventional cloud infrastructure. Canisters serve HTTP, hold state, and can reach the public internet via HTTPS outcalls.
What are canisters?
Canisters are WebAssembly smart contracts with state, compute quotas ("cycles" paid in burned ICP), and the ability to respond directly to HTTP requests. Unlike Ethereum contracts, they can hold gigabytes of state, run indefinite loops (within cycle budget), and perform outbound HTTP calls — making on-chain web apps feasible.
What can you do on ICP?
Decentralised social (OpenChat, DSCVR, Taggr), native Bitcoin integration (ckBTC — ICP signs Bitcoin transactions trustlessly via threshold-ECDSA), and on-chain web applications that serve HTML/JS directly without any traditional cloud provider in the request path.
How does ICP staking work?
ICP is locked into "neurons" whose voting power scales with dissolution delay (6 months to 8 years). Rewards scale similarly — longer lockup earns more. Governance happens through the Network Nervous System (NNS). The ecosystem is more centralised around DFINITY than most L1s; treat decentralisation claims with the usual scepticism.
