Toncoin FAQ

What is Toncoin?
Toncoin (TON) is the native asset of The Open Network, a proof-of-stake blockchain originally designed by the Telegram team in 2018 and spun out to an independent foundation in 2020. It uses sharded workchains to process millions of transactions per second.
What is TON's connection to Telegram?
Telegram distributes a native TON wallet inside the app and integrates tipping, Stars, and mini-apps against it. Payments and bot economies inside Telegram are the biggest driver of TON's retail usage.
How is TON different from other L1s?
TON shards dynamically — workchains split when load increases. Smart contracts are written in FunC or Tact (not Solidity), and the VM has its own bytecode. This delivers throughput but fragments the developer toolchain.
Can I stake TON?
Yes. Standard staking through validator pools needs a sizeable minimum, but pool providers (Tonstakers, bemo, Hipo) let holders stake any amount non-custodially. Rewards accrue in TON.
