USD Coin FAQ
- What is USDC?
- USDC (USD Coin) is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle. Each USDC is backed 1:1 by USD-denominated reserves (cash and short-duration US Treasuries), attested monthly by a major accounting firm and held at regulated US banks.
- Is USDC safe?
- USDC has maintained its peg since launch in 2018, with the notable exception of a brief de-peg in March 2023 during the Silicon Valley Bank collapse, where Circle had exposure. Reserves are now diversified across multiple banks and short-dated Treasuries.
- On which blockchains is USDC available?
- USDC is deployed natively on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, and several other major chains. Circle operates the Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) to move USDC between them without bridge risk.
- Can USDC be frozen?
- Yes — Circle has the technical ability to freeze addresses holding USDC in response to legal orders (sanctions, court mandates). This is a fundamental trade-off of regulated, fiat-backed stablecoins compared to fully decentralised alternatives.
