What is Stellar?
Stellar is an open-source payment network launched 2014 by Jed McCaleb, designed for cross-border remittance and asset issuance. XLM ("Lumens") is the native asset, used for transaction fees, spam prevention, and as a bridge currency between issued assets. The Stellar Development Foundation (nonprofit) stewards the protocol.
How is Stellar different from Ripple (XRP)?
Both grew out of McCaleb's early work; he co-founded Ripple then left to start Stellar. Stellar is nonprofit-governed and focused on financial inclusion (unbanked remittance corridors); Ripple Labs is for-profit and enterprise-focused. They use different consensus algorithms — Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) vs Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm.
What runs on Stellar?
Circle issued USDC natively on Stellar, MoneyGram integrated for cash-to-crypto on-ramps in 180+ countries, and multiple regional stablecoins (Brazilian BRL, Argentine ARS, Ukrainian UAH) live there. Soroban — the smart-contract platform — launched mainnet 2024 and adds general programmability.
What about XLM supply and fees?
XLM supply is fixed at ~50 billion since the 2019 inflation mechanism was removed. Transaction fees are ~$0.00001 and settlement is 3-5 seconds. There is no staking in the PoS sense — validators run on reputation and trust-based quorum slices rather than stake weight.
