Researchers and cryptography experts welcomed the acceleration, according to Decrypt, flagging a real vulnerability: Bitcoin and most layer-one blockchains have no concrete plan to swap out their elliptic-curve signatures before quantum computers could theoretically break them.
The threat is not imminent. Fault-tolerant quantum machines capable of cracking Bitcoin's ECDSA signatures likely remain years away. But the infrastructure gap is genuine. Bitcoin's core protocol runs on signature verification that quantum algorithms can defeat. Updating that verification means coordinating a hard fork across thousands of nodes, exchanges, custodians, and wallets. No blockchain has shipped this at scale.
That coordination problem is the real deadline. Researchers stress that the longer Bitcoin waits, the harder the fork becomes. A migration to post-quantum signatures requires not just protocol changes but upgrades across the entire custody and exchange ecosystem. One late mover risks fragmenting its network if some participants fail to upgrade in time.
Some blockchains have begun research into post-quantum signature schemes, including lattice-based and hash-based candidates being evaluated by standards bodies.
