Bitcoin vs USD Coin FAQ
- What is Bitcoin?
- Bitcoin (BTC) is the first decentralised cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It uses a proof-of-work consensus to settle transactions without a central issuer, and its supply is capped at 21 million coins.
- Who controls Bitcoin?
- No single entity controls Bitcoin. A distributed network of miners secures the ledger, node operators enforce the rules, and developers propose protocol changes through Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs) that must reach rough consensus to ship.
- What is USDC?
- USDC (USD Coin) is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle. Each USDC is backed 1:1 by USD-denominated reserves (cash and short-duration US Treasuries), attested monthly by a major accounting firm and held at regulated US banks.
- Is USDC safe?
- USDC has maintained its peg since launch in 2018, with the notable exception of a brief de-peg in March 2023 during the Silicon Valley Bank collapse, where Circle had exposure. Reserves are now diversified across multiple banks and short-dated Treasuries.
