Polygon vs Optimism FAQ

What is Polygon?
Polygon (MATIC) is an Ethereum scaling ecosystem launched in 2017, initially as a proof-of-stake sidechain and now expanding into zk-rollups (Polygon zkEVM, Polygon CDK) and the AggLayer — a shared liquidity layer for rollups.
What's the MATIC → POL migration?
Polygon's native token is transitioning from MATIC to POL as part of Polygon 2.0. Holders swap 1:1, and POL gains utility across multiple Polygon chains (PoS, zkEVM, future AggLayer chains). Exchange-listed swaps have largely completed.
What is Optimism?
Optimism is an optimistic rollup L2 on Ethereum, launched mainnet 2021 by OP Labs. The broader project is the Optimism Collective — a bicameral governance with the Token House (OP holders) and Citizens' House (soulbound voting for Retroactive Public Goods Funding).
What is the OP Stack?
Open-source codebase for launching optimistic rollups. Base (Coinbase), World Chain, Zora, Mode, and dozens of others are OP Stack chains. Together they form the "Superchain" — shared sequencing infrastructure, bridging, and a common governance layer. It is the dominant rollup framework by chain count.
How do Polygon and Optimism compare?
Polygon (MATIC): Ethereum scaling ecosystem. PoS chain plus zkEVM and AggLayer. Launched 2017, runs Proof-of-Stake (PoS chain). Optimism (OP): OP Stack Superchain (Base, World Chain, Zora). Retroactive Public Goods Funding. Launched 2021, runs Optimistic Rollup (Ethereum L2).
