CoinDesk published an opinion by Hallali warning that a Polymarket-linked weather bet in France points to a bigger issue than market mechanics. The core problem is not how fast people can trade. It is whether the data that settles the bet can be trusted.

Hallali frames the incident as a sign that turning real-world outcomes into tradable events changes what matters most. As more real outcomes become tradable, the “bottleneck” moves away from trading itself. It moves toward the integrity and certification of the data used for settlement.

The argument is simple. Betting markets need credible inputs to resolve outcomes. If the data feeding settlement is wrong, disputed, or poorly certified, then the market can’t reliably settle winners and losers.

CoinDesk’s opinion puts the emphasis on settlement infrastructure, not user demand. If data integrity fails, liquidity and trading features will not fix it.
