Sberbank, Russia's state-controlled largest lender, intends to roll out a cryptocurrency wallet integrated into its consumer and investment platforms once the "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights" bill becomes law in September, according to CoinDesk.
The wallet will function within "Sberbank Online" and "SberInvestments," the bank's existing retail banking and brokerage apps. No timeline beyond the September legislative trigger has been announced, and no details on which assets or service limits the wallet will support are public.
Moscow has spent years cycling between crypto hostility and selective embrace. A 2021 central bank push to ban private holdings gave way to grudging tolerance, then institutional restrictions. This bill represents the third major legislative attempt to codify Russia's stance on digital assets. The framework will govern how banks, exchanges, and custodians operate, and what staking, reserve, and marketing rules apply.
Sberbank's move signals confidence that the Kremlin has settled on a path toward managed market access rather than continued prohibition. Large financial institutions rarely commit to product launches this publicly without high confidence in regulatory green lights.
The bill's passage is not yet guaranteed, though it has cleared earlier parliamentary hurdles. Lawmakers can still amend or delay the September effective date. If it stalls, the bank's timeline stalls with it.
